It's really gotta suck to qualify 3rd on the Sunday before The 500; one away from being assured your speed earned your [starting] spot.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. As a fan, the way they qualify for the race probably couldn't get any better — anyone who bitches about more racing better really bring their A-game for me to still respect them afterwards. As a driver, though, I would be solidly pissed.

Biffle Edwards Newman Keselowski all guaranteed spots at least on speed. It's not just the first two who make it in, just the first two are guaranteed the front row. 3rd through 6 guaranteed a spot but have to race the duels to determine their spot.

Also Johnson Kenseth KyBusch DaleJr Gordon Bowyer guaranteed a spot at least by pts. Then there is the past champ provisional, one spot for one past champ if needed (in order) Stewart KyBusch BLabonte or TLabonte.

Didn't mean spot as in 'qualified for race' but spot as in where they qualify. I know that where you start is not all that indicative of or even overly related to finishing position, but all the same..

I see, I misunderstood you then, I read "one away from being assured your speed earned your spot." when it's actually the top 6 that get in on speed, but you are right only the first 2 know what that spot will be, even though the other 4 know they have earned a spot, they won't know what it is until next week.
